Lineage Socks Test Knit

Here are a few notes about the Lineage test knit, about the pattern, the yarn requirements and timescale. We are hoping to achieve clear and accessible patterns and what is clear to Louise and myself may not be so to everyone!

Sizes
Baby, (Child: Adult – Small: Medium: Large) 12 (14.5: 17: 19.5: 22) cm / 4.75 (5.75: 6.75: 7.75: 8.5) inches.
Choose a size abut 10% smaller in circumference than the intended wearers leg or foot for best fit.

Yarn
I used Ainsworth & Prin Classic Sock Set 100g / 365m skein plus 2 x 20g / 73m mini skeins
There is no obligation to use our yarn though, all you need to do is choose appropriate sock yarns from your stash, that are of a similar yardage and composition.

To give you an idea of the quantities you will need for the size 5 sock I used:
Yarn A = 85g / 311m
Yarn B = 13g / 48m
Yarn C = 6g / 22m

For the size 4 I used:
A = 67g / 245m
B = 11g / 41m
C = 5g / 19m

You will also need:
1 set of 2.25mm / US 1 double-pointed needles (DPNs), or your preferred needles for working small circumferences in the round.
Louise and I knit with DPNs but you can knit with whatever needles you feel comfortable with.

Spare 2.25mm / US 1 DPN to pick up heel stitches. 3 Stitch markers.
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Skills you may need:
The socks are knit top down in the round and to finish them you will need to be able to knit small circumferences in the round, but we don’t mind which method you use.

You will need to match the gauge or get as close to it as possible.

The stitches are simple; knit and purl, and the decreases standard ssk, k 2 tog and p 2tog.

You will need to be able to pick up stitches along a garter stitch edge and you will need to be able to graft the toe stitches together.

All these techniques are easy to find on Youtube videos so don’t worry if these are your first pair of hand knit socks. It will be interesting to get the views of knitters with different levels of experience.

Timescale:
We would like you to send us photographs and notes on your experience of the knitting by Friday 15th March 2024. You will only need to knit one sock as they are identical, but hopefully you’ll go on to knit the second one!

We would like two test knitters for each of the sizes, and particularly those who can try the fit out on a baby or child.

If you decide this is still for you and would like to volunteer for the test knit I will send you the tech edited pattern, photos of the finished socks and any appropriate detail shots.
If any errors come to light I’ll email them to you as quickly as possible.

Thank You
As a thank you we will send you a pdf or Ravelry copy of the finished published pattern plus your choice of one of our other patterns. At the end of the test knit we will randomly draw a name from all those who finished the project for a skein of Ainsworth and Prin yarn of their choice.

Thank you for reading through this and I hope it doesn’t sound too daunting! exciting to see the finished projects.

Many Thanks
Nicola x
