 Jelly Mitts    #jellymitts

A pair of women's hands wearing red and green ribbed mittens and holding some logs

Mistake rib makes a squishy pair of woollen mitts for chilly spring or autumn days. Their fluted sides and rolled edges remind us of elaborate Victorian jelly moulds. The rib will hug your hands and wrists and the rolled edge leaves your fingers free. You only need a tiny amount of contrast colour and you could use up even tinier scraps and edge the hands and thumbs in different colours.

Cast On – Make 2 alike
Using MC and 2.75mm/US 2 needles cast-on 56 sts using the long tail method. Join to work in the round being careful not to twist cast-on edge. Place marker for BOR.

Rnd 1: *K2, p2; rep from * to end of round.
Rnd 2: P1, *k2, p2; rep from * to last 3 sts, k2, p1.
These two rounds form mistake rib pattern, rep until the work measures  12cm / 4 3⁄4”, ending with round 2.

Thumb Placement
Next rnd: K2, p2, k2, with waste yarn k the next 11 sts, slip sts just worked back to left needle and with MC work in patt to end.

Continue in patt for a further 6cm / 2 1/2” or desired length.

Change to 2.5mm needles and join in CC.
Knit 6 rounds.
Cast off loosely.

Thumb
Using 2.75mm needles, pick up the right leg or side of the 11 stitches directly under the waste yarn. Using another 2.75mm needle repeat for the 11 stitches directly above the waste yarn. You now have two needles with 11 stitches each. Carefully remove the waste yarn ensuring all stitches are safely on the needles.

Next rnd: Using MC * (p2, k2) x2, p2, k1 across the stitches on needle 1 Pick up and knit 1 stitch from the side of the thumbhole; rep from * across the stitches on needle 2. Rearrange the stitches on 3 needles and place a marker for BOR. 24 sts.

Rnd 1: K1, * p2, k2; rep from * to last 3 sts, p2, k1.
Rnd 2: * P2, k2; rep from to end of round.
Repeat these two rounds 12 more times, 14 rounds in total.

Change to 2.5mm needles and join in CC.
Knit 6 rounds.
Cast off loosely.

Finishing
Sew in ends and block the mittens lightly with one thumb aligned for the left hand and one for the right. hand
